In Loving Memory Dorothy May “Dot” BRAATEN September, 1935 – September, 2010 It is with regret that we announce the passing of Dorothy “Dot” Braaten. Dot was born in Lucky Lake Saskatchewan in 1935 but lived the majority of her years in the Clearwater area. Dot is survived by her loving children, Gary (Kathy) Braaten, Lynda Collins, Ron (Lisa) Braaten, Brian (Tamie) Braaten, her 16 grandchildren, her 10 great grandchildren, her sisters, Muriel (Bob) Smith and Katie (Lawrence) Redman, and many nieces and nephews. Dot was predeceased by her parents Tony and Claire (Rudlang) and her brother, Bruce Rudlang.
After she began working in Clearwater in 1956 at the Clearwater General Store, Dot discovered her true passion was in cooking. She cooked in camps and in restaurants from Clearwater to Prince George, where she cooked and baked for as many as 200 men at a time. Later in her cooking career Dorothy worked at the Chuckwagon Restaurant in Clearwater.Remembered by everyone for her large and tasty meals, Dorothy could be found at the Chuckwagon as early as 4:00 am, preparing hearty breakfasts and take out lunches for the early rising loggers in Clearwater. Dot’s famous burgers and flapper pie created delicious memories for all who experienced them. A generous woman, Dorothy was well known for her kind heartedness and selflessness. Aside from cooking, Dot’s main passion was her family and she was always ready to help them when needed. Everyone who knew her appreciated Dot’s great sense of humor and ability to tell an entertaining story. She was always ready with a new joke or funny story to share. Dot loved the outdoors. One of her great joys was camping and fishing with family and friends. As an accomplished musician and singer, Dot would take advantage of gatherings around the campfire to entertain everyone with her singing or yodeling while she played the accordion or guitar. Dot’s love of fishing (secrets) and camping (stories) was passed on to her family and can be seen today in the joy they continue to experience in their outdoor adventures. Dot will be missed by many who will cherish the memories of the good times they enjoyed with her.
Following cremation, the family will gather for Dot’s interment at Riverview Cemetery, Clearwater. There will be a Memorial Service for Dorothy Braaten at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 16, 2010 at the Royal Canadian Legion in Clearwater, BC.
